COURSE DESCRIPTION

Understand the fundamentals of computer nomenclature, particularly with respect to personal computer hardware and software and the World Wide Web; make use of the World Wide Web as a repository of the latest information and an integrated learning tool; develop an in-depth understanding of why computers are essential components in the business world and society in general; focus on the computer as a valuable productivity tool; recognize the personal computer's position as the backbone of the computer industry and emphasize its use a stand-alone and networked device; present strategies for purchasing, installing, and maintaining a personal computer system; and, assist students in planning a career in the computer field.

Attendance:

Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class session. Attendance and punctuality is of the utmost importance. Class notes are extremely important as information presented may be presented in class which does not appear in the text. If you are going to be absent, it is your responsibility to obtain notes from another student.

Homework, Quizzes and Exams

There will be a test each week over the material assigned. Quizzes will be given unannounced. Quizzes may not be made up. Late assignments will not be accepted. If you miss an assignment, you will be allowed to turn it in for ½ credit at the end of the term. A final comprehensive exam will be administered at the end of the term.

Grading Criteria

The grading scale for this course will be as follows:

A = 93 – 100%

A- = 92%

B+ = 91%

B = 83 – 90

B- = 82%

C+ = 81%

C = 71 – 80%

C- = 70%

D+ = 69%

D = 60 – 68%

D- = 59%

Extra Credit

You may complete any one of the 18 Interactive Lab exercises found at the end of the chapters (see Exercise 2 on page 1.46) that are not assigned for 5 points each, up to maximum of 25 points. Each of the five Interactive Labs must come from a different chapter.

Schedule

Please read each assigned chapter before class.

Make sure your name, and exercise number in the upper-left corner. If an exercise has multiple sheets, then staple them together. Please do not staple different assignments together. Disorganized assignments (pages out of order, mislabeled, unreadable, etc.) will receive a ½ credit.

Chapter reading assignments include Special Features at the end of some of the chapters.
